Update on the situation

How You Can Help
On the evening of August 15th, 2007 an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck the southern coast of Peru, leaving many cities and towns almost completely destroyed. Those of us in the Harvard community with ties to the region can thankfully say that our families and friends are safe, but for thousands of others in the country this event has been catastrophic. The death toll is currently at over 500 and continues to rise daily as rescue workers carefully make their way through the wreckage, an effort that has been complicated by the 500 or so aftershocks the area has experienced in the week after the initial temblor. Over 1,000 people are injured with few local hospitals left standing to attend to them, and more than 100,000 people are now homeless during one of the worst winters recorded in South America. The provision of water, food, clothing, medicines, and shelter is desperately needed.

In response, several students and alumni have come together to coordinate the efforts of the Harvard community in aiding the victims of this terrible disaster. While we have long-term goals to assist in the reconstruction efforts that will take place in the coming months, we realize the victims have more immediate needs that must be met in order to prevent further loss of life. To this end, we have set up an online account that allows you to make monetary donations that will then be used towards the purchase of water and non-perishable food and the construction of homes in the affected areas througha local NGO (Un Techo Para Mi Pais - www.untechoparamipais.org). Our target fund-raising goal is $3000 by August 31st. To make a donation, please click here: http://crimsonperusolidarity.chipin.com.

Many governments and charities from around the world have already responded to this crisis, but many more resources are needed to mount a humanitarian response to a disaster of this magnitude. Even the smallest donation on your part can make a big difference during this uncertain and devastating time for those in Peru. Please also encourage family and friends to help. If you have any questions, contact us at harvard.peru.solidarity@gmail.com.
